Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” has reached its EOL on July 10th, 2025. Ubuntu 24.10 was released back in October 2024. Ubuntu 24.10 only got 9 months of support. That means it’s no longer getting any updates or security patches from Canonical. It came with the Linux 6.11 kernel and GNOME 47 desktop.
Now that it’s past its support window, continuing to use Ubuntu 24.10 could leave your system open to security risks. So, it’s probably a good time to think about upgrading.
The next version to move to is Ubuntu 25.04 “Plucky Puffin”, which will be supported until February 2026. It’s got some cool upgrades, like the Linux 6.14 kernel, Mesa 25 graphics, and GNOME 48.
Upgrading should only take about 30 minutes, but make sure to back up your important files first—just in case. If you’re not too interested in the newest features, you can also go with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS “Noble Numbat”, which will get updates for a whole decade.
How To Upgrade Ubuntu 24.10 to Ubuntu 25.04
One of the most important things that you should do before upgrading is to backup your files. After that run the following commands to update your current system.
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade sudo apt dist-upgrade
You might need to install the Update Manager (if needed)
sudo apt install update-manager-core
Now, it’s time to start the upgrade process by executing following command in your terminal.
sudo do-release-upgrade
If you’re upgrading from a non-LTS version, it might ask you to confirm that you want to upgrade. Just follow the prompts, and it’ll take care of the rest. Follow the onscreen instructions. After the upgrade is finished, you’ll be asked to restart your system. Go ahead and reboot your Ubuntu.
sudo reboot
After your system restarts, you should be running Ubuntu 25.04 “Plucky Puffin”! 🎉
