At first, We need to enable restricted repository

Because of being a non free software, The NVIDIA proprietary driver is available in the restricted system repository. That repository is usually enabled by default. Or you can check it by going to the Software & Updates and verify by checking “Proprietary drivers for devices (restricted)” option.

Now, run the following command to update your Ubuntu along with it’s packages.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Now, it’s time to install NVIDIA driver in Ubuntu.

Install NVIDIA Driver

To do this, you need to launch Additional Drivers utility. In this tool, you can find the list of available drivers for your device. Choose the desire one, then click “Apply Changes”. When done installing the driver, it prompts that “You need to restart the computer to complete the driver changes”. You need to  click on “Restart” button to apply.

So, this method will help you to switch betwwen NVIDIA and integrated GPU in Ubuntu. Search for and launch NVIDIA Settings utility. Navigate to PRIME Profiles tab, for switching between following available GPU modes:

  • NVIDIA (Performance) – use NVIDIA only for the Desktop.
  • NVIDIA On-Demand – use integrated GPU , and only NVIDIA when specified.
  • Intel Power saving mode– This might be grayed out. If you want to choose it, then press Ctrl+Alt+T to open up a terminal window, and run the following command:
sudo prime-select intel

After switching GPU, you need to restart computer to apply change. If you want to know which GPU is currently in use, run the following command:

glxinfo |grep -E "OpenGL vendor|OpenGL renderer"
